09/21 SAPA remembers Michelle Owens

Directors, Members, and Friends, 

We’d like to take an opportunity to share some important information.  While this is not new information for many of you, it seems safe to assume that it will be news to some. 

As we entered last weekend, many were focused on the tasks at hand: Friday night football games, a first contest on Saturday, a circuit meeting on Sunday.  In all of that hustle and bustle (that was a typical weekend of band, percussion, and colorguard directors), we received some sad news about someone who was special to many of us, and to countless others as well. 

Michelle Owens, one of our very own, lost a year-long battle to cancer.  While we, as SAPA, do get to claim this giant of a human being as ours, it is important to know that Michelle was special to so many not just locally, but around the country.  Following the news of her passing, kind words began to flood social media as friends shared in the grief of her death, and the celebration of her life.  We’re certain, over the next coming days and months, we will continue to see this testament to the number of people and lives she has touched not only as a colorguard instructor and director, but as a colleague, friend, and loved one. 

It is with a heavy heart that we extend all our thoughts, and all our love to Michelle’s loved ones in this time of great loss. 

Let us take this time to recognize, reflect, and remember Michelle Owens and the impact she had during her life. We will be forever grateful for knowing her, and for the work she so tirelessly put in to ensure her students found the same love for this activity as she did herself.  That is something worth preserving.  So, over the course of the next few months, the Board and Staff of SAPA will be working to ensure that Michelle’s memory will be honored, and that her good work, infectious presence, and love for pageantry will continue to be shared long after her time physically with us has passed.
