SAPA event audience and performers

A safe, respectful, and educational environment for all participants, staff, volunteers, and spectators.

Purpose & Scope

The SAPA Code of Conduct sets expectations for behavior at all SAPA-sanctioned activities—including rehearsals, competitions, clinics, and meetings—and applies to directors, staff, performers, volunteers, judges, vendors, and spectators.

Core Standards of Conduct

Respect

Treat all individuals with dignity; avoid harassment, bullying, or discrimination of any kind.

Safety

Prioritize physical and emotional safety; follow event instructions and facility rules.

Integrity

Act honestly; follow contest procedures; avoid conflicts of interest and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Professionalism

Model positive behavior; communicate concerns appropriately and through the proper channels.

Prohibited Conduct (Non-Exhaustive)

Harassment & Discrimination

Verbal, physical, or online harassment; discriminatory behavior based on protected characteristics.

Abuse & Misconduct

Emotional, physical, or sexual misconduct; hazing; grooming; retaliation against reporters.

Safety Violations

Reckless prop use, unsafe movement, ignoring host/facility rules or event staff instructions.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Disruptive behavior, disrespect toward judges/staff, or attempts to influence adjudication.

Reporting & Response

How to Report

Report concerns promptly. You may submit anonymously or contact SAPA leadership directly.

SAPA does not tolerate retaliation against individuals who make good-faith reports.

What Happens Next

  1. SAPA reviews the report and may request details.
  2. Immediate safety measures may be implemented as needed.
  3. Findings determine actions per policy (education, warning, sanctions).

Enforcement & Sanctions

Consequences depend on severity and context, and may include education/coaching, written warning, removal from an event, suspension from future events, or loss of circuit privileges. Criminal behavior may be referred to law enforcement.

Appeals

Appeal procedures will be communicated with any sanction decision where applicable.

Event Removal

Hosts and SAPA officials may remove individuals whose behavior jeopardizes safety or event operations.

Role-Specific Expectations

Directors & Staff

  • Model policy-aligned behavior; train students and volunteers.
  • Complete Participant Protection requirements.
  • Address issues promptly; use reporting when needed.

Performers

  • Respect fellow performers, staff, and competitors.
  • Follow event schedules, warm-up flow, and safety instructions.
  • Report concerns to a trusted adult or SAPA channel.

Spectators & Volunteers

  • Cheer positively; avoid disruptive or abusive behavior.
  • Follow host instructions and facility policies.
  • Use accessible seating/paths as needed; ask for help early.

Event Guidelines

  • Follow warm-up and performance flow; ensure props/equipment are safe and secured.
  • Adhere to host facility rules (backstage, stands, photography, food/drink, egress).
  • Respect event staff and judges; use proper channels for inquiries or protests.
  • Comply with media and intellectual property requirements.

Acknowledgment

Participation in SAPA events indicates that individuals and organizations agree to adhere to this Code of Conduct and related SAPA policies. Directors are responsible for ensuring their members and supporters understand these expectations.
