01/08 SAPA Education Day Events 2018

Posted 01/08 by Megan Phillips

The first three SAPA shows of the 2018 season have been set aside as designated education days. On show day, the following will be provided to staff as part of this year's education initiative:

  1. An overview tape created for you by a design mentor. Staff from each unit will recieve feedback from Courtney Mills at Etowah HS, from John Escalante at Kennesaw Mountain, and from KC Perkins at Alpharetta HS.
  2. An expanded critique opportunity that will allow you to discuss show-specific design at length with ONE judge. In order to allow for this expanded time with a judge, critique will run a little differently than at other regular season shows. First, staff members will rotate between three judges at 3-minute intervals per usual: movement and equipment judges will be at two of the three stations at each show, the third station will either be the DA judge or one of the GE judges. Then, staff members will move to an educational overview area where groups will go to ONE judge table and spend an entire nine minutes there. At this point, staff members will be speaking with either the overview commentator or a GE or DA judge that is well-versed and experienced in overall show design. In order to take FULL ADVANTAGE of the expanded critique, instructors are encouraged to provide a video of your group’s performance and any materials that may help you have a productive design conversation with the judge (uniform sketch/flag/floor design, additional music, drill or choreography plans, etc).

In order to better facilitate our expanded critique experience, please email Nora Lowery at if you would like to participate in the educational overview critique. We ask that you email her no later than the Wednesday prior to each show day. If you are attending the Etowah show on January 20th, Nora needs to receive your email no later than close of business on Wednesday the 17th.

Please email if you have any questions regarding the early season education days.

Best of luck to all units as you enter into your competitive season!!
